ATEX inspections to BS EN 60079-17 are critical evaluations conducted to ensure the safety and compliance of equipment and installations in potentially explosive atmospheres. BS EN 60079-17 is a key standard in the ATEX framework and provides detailed guidance on the inspection and maintenance of electrical and non-electrical equipment used in hazardous areas. These inspections are designed to verify that equipment is appropriately selected, installed and maintained to minimise the risk of ignition in environments with flammable gases, vapours or dusts.
Before a plant or equipment is brought into service, it shall be given an initial inspection. As part of the plant commissioning and start up procedures, initial inspection and other additional requirements are provided in BS EN 60079.
To ensure that the installations are maintained in a satisfactory condition for continued use within a hazardous area, either
a) regular periodic inspections, or
b) continuous supervision by skilled personnel, and, where necessary, maintenance should be carried out.
The interval between periodic inspections shall not exceed three years without seeking expert advice. The basis for changing the inspection period shall be documented.
